Large Wildfire Shelter

for Large Animals and People

Expanding on my series, Portable Wildfire Shelters, and 6 Wildfire Shelters for Small Animals, I created the Large Wildfire Shelter imaged in the documentation below. The structure is 7.75′ x 11′ x 11′, with entrances/exits on all four sides.

This summer, I installed the shelter temporarily in Nova Scotia, CAN and documented the installation with digital photography, video, and drone technology. Like the other wildfire shelters I created, this piece is speculative in nature. It has the appearance of offering protection from flame, heat, and smoke exposure but functions as a sculptural object, which I refer to as “Survival Architecture“.

This work engages viewers to visualize and question whether we now need structures of this nature, given the increase frequency and intensity of wildfires resulting from our climate changing.
